Mario Theories and Headcanons

Feel free to ask me questions about the stuff on this page, since this might all be a bit incomprehensible to anyone who doesn't also have an in-depth knowledge of Mario lore. Or you can ask me about Mario stuff that has nothing to do with the stuff on this page! I'm always open to talking about my speculations on specific things!Be warned! This page is very long, both on desktop and on mobile (though especially the latter).

The MatPat Disclaimer.

MatPat's theories are not fact. They're theories. I don't care if the stuff I say contradicts things that he's claimed. I've gone down the path of debating a Game Theorist before, and I will not be doing so again.

Rosalina's parents are Blumiere and Timpani.

Surely nobody is surprised that my first theory ties my favorite character to my favorite game, right?Rosalina is the daughter of Blumiere and Timpani. Her whole deal with being the only... Goddess? Super-powered human? Whatever-she-is of her kind comes from the fact that she's the only daughter of an Ancient and a Human. This also explains her getting called a "Princess," despite not having a Kingdom. I don't know much about royalty titles, and I'm sure that the daughter of a Lord and a Lady would have a different title, but royalty titles generally seem to work differently in the Mario Universe anyway. While this would technically mean that she's born after the events of Super Paper Mario, the fact that Rosalina is not really held to the flow of time gets around that whole deal.I'm almost certain there are several things written about her in both the Prognosticuses. That doesn't really have anything to do with this, I just wanted to add that.As for who her "brother" is... I don't really have anything for that part yet, since, as I stated above, Rosalina's really the only person with her role.

A page from Rosalina's storybook, depicting the hill where her mother was buried when she passed.

"She's sleeping under the tree on the hill!"Timpani, as the only full-human of her family, would probably have a shorter life, thus why Rosalina's mother is referenced here, but not her brother or father.(That's dark, I know.)Hell, Blumiere is probably still around somewhere.

There's a pact between Bowser and Peach.

Yes, I'm aware this is a MatPat theory. My specific reasonings and conclusions are mostly different, though.I think the entire feud between the Mushroom Kingdom and the Koopa Kingdom is a sort of Capulets-and-Montagues situation, where the conflict is only just bad blood between the Mushroom King (Peach's father) and Bowser's father.This whole headcanon started with a small detail from a single Mario comic, where it's revealed that Bowser's very-absent father is an infamous criminal in the Mushroom Kingdom. The exact quote is below.Peach and Bowser are both reasonable enough to see that the feud is doing far more harm than good to both sides, and arrange an Alliance in secrecy, keeping up the whole charade to prevent the Mushroom King from working out what's going on.Some other general evidence I cite for this;
- Peach can-and has evaded being kidnapped on several occasions, so there's no real reason that she cannot continue to avoid capture.
- Bowser's motives are very inconsistent, and generally, his insistence of kidnapping Peach often gets in the way of his other plans.
- There's also the whole thing with Bowser participating in the Sports, Kart, and Party games, and how that completely doesn't add up.

Here's the comic quote in question. This headcanon runs a lot deeper than what's on here, but I am not going to try and explain all of it.But, for the record; Mario is in on it. He's not just being strung along by Peach and Bowser.Someday I'll write some ao3 fics about it, probably.

Paper Mario takes place in a History Book.

More specifically, a copy of picturized history book for kids, which had magic stuff happen to it, which caused it to go awry. This one is mainly meant to explain why the Paper version of the characters are distinctly very different from the Real ones. And, honestly, it's practically canon. For one, the first three Paper Mario games all take place in books. Not necessarily the same book, but all in books. Whereas the latter three seem to actually be in an alternate reality made of paper, since the plot/threats in those games are actually based around paper and stationary. For two, in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, Paper Mario enters the real world by coming out of a book in Peach's Castle. Why did Peach have the book? Why is it magic? None of that's really explained. So, I cobbled all those details together to create the headcanon; The book in question (pictured) is Mushroom Kingdom History: For Kids, and the first three Paper Mario games are simply just historical stories. However, this particular copy of the book was hit with magic that created an entire world inside, which is what the latter three Paper Mario games are. Also, I just generally feel like Peach is the type of gal to have a lot of powerful magical artifacts sort of just... around her castle. Y'know, for funsies.

This is the book! I think it's worth noting that, despite being a Real world object, it very much has the appearance of a Paper world one, which lends to the theory that something happened to this copy in particular. It especially stands out against the rest of the books on the shelf.

There's a Brooklyn in The Metro Kingdom.

Mario and Luigi's backstory is so inconsistent that I ended up merging the two main stories into my own idea. The Mario Bros. are originally from Brooklyn. Not the Brooklyn of our world, but a Brooklyn in their universe that's somewhere in the Metro Kingdom. I mean, city names get repeated all the time, who's to say that doesn't still happen cross-dimentionally?In Brooklyn, they are still self-employed as Mario Bros. Plumbing, of course. However, in their world, this evidently has different implications. Since pipes are a very different concept there (such as the fact that they're implied to be like, a naturally-occuring thing), this explains why two plumbers are as agile and generally skilled as the Bros. are.The Isekai part still somewhat happens; Most pipes the Bros. deal with aren't ever that long-distance, but one day, they end up getting sucked into one that takes them far across the world to the Mushroom Kingdom. While it is more familiar to them than it would be coming from our world, neither of them have ever left the Metro Kingdom, so there's still a lot of unfamiliarity. From there, they get sucked into the whole Mushroom vs. Koopa conflict as normal as the plot just goes from there.

I will say, maybe it's not quite called Brooklyn. It could be like, "Brook Lynn," and it's named after someone, or it's near the Lynn Brook. That I don't have concrete.I just got tired of grappling with the fact that the Bros.' backstory changes back and forth so much and decided I knew better than Nintendo now.

Random Character Headcanons!

Just to close out, I'm gonna move away from the long-winded stuff now, and just drop a few of my random character headcanons with no real explanation.- Mario is Ace, and the reason Peach constantly offers him cake is because she's aware of The Meme™. Mario is the only one who never picks up on the joke.
- Luigi is super physically affectionate. Whether platonic, familial, romantic, whatever! Luigi is gonna hug you either way and you cannot stop him.
- Peach's biggest (and arguably only) major character flaw is that she's super disorganized, despite how prim-and-proper she is. Toadette's job title is "Royal's Sorter."
- Bowser is somewhere under the non-binary umbrella, because Koopas as a whole don't really... gender.
- Daisy's last name is Calico.
- Pauline and DK have no resentment between them, having both moved on from the events of the original Donkey Kong. They're actually decent friends, now!
- Wario always says "Nor/Mal" when someone asks for his pronouns. His husband, Waluigi, slaps him in the back of the head every time he does.
